A blog about decorating a home beautifully on a budget

Fall Day & Thrifty Finds

October 9, 2011 By Sherry

Yesterday was a beautiful Fall day here in Virginia.
My day started very early as our neighborhood was having their annual garage sale this weekend. Can you believe I didn’t buy a thing?
I was home by 8:00 AM and Steve and I took an hour and a half drive to Appomattox, Va. to visit the village where Lee surrendered his army to General Grant and the surrounding battlefields.  The meeting between the Generals at the Wilmer McLean house is where the surrender was written which ended the civil war.  Most of the original buildings are still there and have been beautifully restored.
The weather was perfect and the trees were just beginning to change colors.
It was a wonderful day to outside.

Above is the home where the surrender was written.

The battle took place right up to the doorsteps of this village.

From there we headed  to the Historic town of Appomattox for their Fall festival.  It was here that Grant’s army captured the the train with supplies that were headed to Lee’s Calvary .  With his men starving and no supplies,  Lee realized there was no choice but to surrender.
They close off the streets for the festival and as you can see it is a very popular event.
Some people even brought their pets!
Of course we couldn’t leave this cute area without stopping at a couple of  antique shops.
Ill be back later to show you my thrifty finds for the week.
I hope you had a wonderful weekend too!
xo,
Sherry

The snake pic I could have done without! Ewww. I can't believe they would let them there with that. Looks like a fun day and I can't wait to see your goods.

What a beautiful fall day you had Sherry! I love the history lesson too. It looks like it's quite the popular event.

I had to laugh about the snake picture. What are people thinking when they take a snake to a public event??

I'm eager to see what you bought.

    Have a great week!

I have always wanted to go to Virginia! I bet it is just beautiful. We took a week-end camping trip, and junked all week-end. It was wonderful! Can't wait to see what you found, but could have done without the snake pic!

Looks as though you had a really nice road trip. Nothing like history to help us appreciate being an American.

What is it about Fall that just cries out festivals and antique shopping? We had two in our area this weekend. The village looks so lovely, it's hard to imagine a battle being fought in that spot.
    Best,

We spent some time there when we lived in Richmond. It was a really great experience.

That's not even funny that someone carries a snake around!! I would be searching for the nearest hoe! Sorry, but I really hate snakes.

Ahhh, there's nothing better than learning history of your land under a beautiful blue sky.
The festival looked great, but I think the pet snake was a little out of its' element there.
Oh boy, did you pass up those beautiful dinnerware? LOL.

It was so nice to see photos of Appomattox. I visited there when we went to Virginia to visit my Gr. grandparents old home place in Prince Edward County. Thanks and I'll be looking forward to seeing your latest finds.

What a gorgeous day in Virginia, Sherry! I know you had a blast. Do leash laws apply to snakes? :/
