A blog about decorating a home beautifully on a budget

Casey Key And Return To The Sixties

May 11, 2015 By Sherry

Hi everyone.

I hope you had a wonderful and relaxing weekend.

Steve and I went to the beach for four days of much needed relaxation.  This was our first time visiting the small island of Casey Key but we will definitely be back.  You won’t find any high rises, restaurants, shopping or even hotels on the island,  just small 1950 motels which most have been renovated.

We stayed at “On The Beach Casey Key” which is cutest little place with just a handful of rooms.  It had recently been completely gutted and renovated into boutique style accommodations right on the beach.  Steve and I really enjoyed the peace and quite of this place and the staff was wonderful.

There are a couple of good seafood restaurants right across the bridge and Venice is just four miles from the island and Sarasota approximately seven miles away.

Casey Key is known for the beautiful sunsets….and obviously some very unique residents.

Twice a week the locals celebrate the sunset, and the end of another day, with a drum circle. Everyone brings their lawn chairs to the beach about an hour before sunset and there is a group playing bongo drums. The drummers were actually very good.

Some of the locals “entertain” the tourist.

Imagine that you are transported back to the sixties!  Just wait, you’ll see from the pictures exactly what I mean.

We called this guy “bird man” because he danced around like a bird in terrible pain.  He had me laughing so hard I was in tears.

I can’t say this was the typical way we spend our evenings on the beach but I haven’t laughed this hard in years!   Though the locals were a little colorful they all appeared to be having such a  good time and they definitely kept the tourist entertained.

Thanks for dropping by.
Hugs,
Sherry

That looks like my kind of place! So pretty and bohemian – I was born in the sixties and consider myself a "flower" child, even to this day –

Thanks for sharing. I looks wonderful. I'm adding this location to my bucket list! 🙂

This looks like a ton of fun and yes, it has the 60's written all over it! 😉 The motel looks super sweet, I love the colors. It reminds me of Jane Coslick's work. I wonder if the inside were as charming as the outside?

Oh my goodness! I've never seen anything like that before. I guess it's all good since they weren't passing around a bong or anything. LOL! glad that you were able to go somewhere for some R&R.

that little motel was totally adorable! I didn't see you out there dancing Sherry…huh? yes, I'd be there rolling on the ground in laughter.

Sounds like such a cool and unique place Sherry, how refreshing that there aren't any big condos! I have seen sunset celebrations in Key West, full of crazy characters for sure!

Sounds like LOTS of fun! I'm glad that you and Steve were able to get away for a little vacay. I love that shot you did of the long porch in front of (back of?) the rooms with all the matching overhangs and chairs. Hope you are feeling better!

Laughter is just the BEST way to get away from it all! Those characters would do it for me!!
