Challenges And New Additions To The Family Room

Decorating our new home is turning into quite a challenge!
I’ve never seen a house with so many weird angles,  nooks and crannies.  The family room has a full wall of windows  (soon to be French doors),  four openings into other rooms and a wall that juts strangely into the room.  This leaves very little wall space for furniture and art.
Below is my most recent attempt at arranging furniture.

Everything moved to the right side of the room.

Did you notice the new coffee table/ottoman?  It is upholstered in linen and was a great find at Tuesday Morning.  Just don’t stub your toe on the iron base…ouch!

The grain sack pillows were a trade with another vendor at The Polka Dot Flea.  She was admiring a small aubusson rug I had for sale and we did a swap for the two pillows.  I should have my new Pottery Barn rug soon and I’ll be back with pictures.

The color of the lamp shades is bugging me.  Should I replace them with white shades or with ones the
color of the ottoman?

Stay tuned.. By next week I’ll have moved the furniture once again.

I hope you have a safe and wonderful 4TH of July.

Hugs,
Sherry

  1. The ottoman is fabulous. Don't you just love Tuesday Morning? I am a big fan of placing a basket/tray on the ottoman/coffee table. Yours looks great. Smart move on the pillow swap! Try to hang in there, I'm sure you'll figure it all out in due time:)

  2. Very pretty, Sherry! I think something in that linen color on your lampshades would look great. I had a hard time getting used to our open floor plan when we moved to our condo after having lots of walls to hang stuff on at our old house.

  3. Sherry your room looks gorgeous! You would never know you had so many challenges architecturally in this space…you have overcome them beautifully! I think white shades would make those fabulous lamps really stand out, but no matter what you choose those lamps and this room are winners!
    Happy 4th of July!!!

  4. Love your room colors and how summery it all looks.

Have you thought of spray painting your current lampshades? It's easy and if you don't like the result, you can always get new ones.

I await your new rug with interest!

Happy 4th of July to you, too!

    Hugs!

  5. I really like your lamps. I think I would use white shades, maybe a little larger than the ones there now which might call for a taller harp.

  6. I really like your new coffee table/ottoman! Love the new pillows you got too. The whole room has a nice Country French feel to it. I do think the lampshades would look nice if they matched the ottoman. Is it burlap?

  7. So great to hear that the bank of windows will soon be french doors!….love the new coffee table/ottoman…you will probably be re-arranging the furniture many times until you feel it is perfect…yes, so hard to arrange furniture in rooms with many angles…beautiful linen shades that coordinate with the coffee table would be nice too…

  8. You have a gorgeous room here! Love the Ottoman, so pretty and it looks perfect with your style decor. I like the lamps too, maybe a linen shade.. our Tuesday Morning closed recently, so sad! Thanks Sherry for stopping by my blog. I'm about to follow yours. Nice to meet you 🙂

  9. Wow! What a great space! I love your new coffee table! Can you (pretty-please) tell me where you purchased the wicker trunks you are using as side tables? I have been searching for one exactly like these! Thank you!

  10. The room may have some oddities, but you are definitely giving it the Sherry-touch and making it beautiful. I vote for lampshades the color of the ottoman!

  11. Sherry, what a welcoming relaxing space 🙂 Not sure of the colours in your rug which is yet to come but I note pockets of blue throughout your setting. Perhaps a blue shade picking up the vibrant hue in your painting could give the lift you desire? Cheers from Down Under and Happy 4th of July everyone *^_^*

  12. Sherry, I love misxing the white slip cover with the dark furniture. I have no idea about the lamp shades, why don't you try wrapping a white dish towel around the shade or putting a white t shirt over it…Then stand back…you will know if white is right, or a piece of linen fabric wrapped around it….so glad you are finally able to play with your decorating. bet you never noticed all of the odd angles until you started placing furniture!

  13. I had to giggle as I am constantly moving things around and my husband just walks in these days, looks around and goes hmmm.

Those two ceramic lamps you have are stunning, where did you get these from please? Not that I will be able to get them in NZ as I know that the electrics will be different as your voltage is different.

I think the room looks fabulous, I love the pops of colour and the many textures you have used.

    Lee 🙂

  14. Hi Sherry,

Your family room is looking fabulously refreshing and cozy with all the wonderful colours. Love the arrangement of furniture and accessories and looking forward to the master bedroom reveal!

    Enjoy the grands!
