Extreme Makeover Foreclosure ~ Must See

While searching for a new home I ran across this home that was once featured on the TV show, Extreme Makeover – Home Edition.
On the show they choose a deserving family and build them a new, normally expensive, home.  Sounds great…but many of these homes have gone into foreclosure after the owners borrowed against the homes to pay taxes, increased insurance and additional debts associated with a larger and more expensive home.  Also, the homes can be difficult to sale because they are built on the owners previous lot, which in most cases is located in an area of less expensive homes.
The home below is in foreclosure, located in the Orlando area, 4300 sq feet and listed for $335,000.  All photos from real estate listing on Trulia.

Love the cabinets
So far pretty good.  Needs paint, new light fixtures and appliances.
Mud room
Master Bedroom
Now here is where it gets really strange!
I can’t say I have ever seen a home with a cave built in it before! LOL
Actually, our grandchildren would love this room!  Any ideas on how to decorate a cave??
I think this gigantic fish would scare some small children.
This room was decorated for a young girl that wanted to be a DJ.
The owner had a yard sale prior to foreclosure and as you can see in the picture she even sold the bathroom sinks!
The sales price is great and I see potential in this home (with lots of work). Unfortunately,  other homes in the neighborhood are not comparable in size or price and the area is somewhat rural for us.   Strike this one off the list. To see this episode of Extreme Makeover go to You Tube here.
Thanks for visiting and I hope to see you at the Open House party tomorrow evening.
Hugs,

  1. Hi Sherry well I hope that it gets a good owner; I wouldn't take it on either. You will find what is perfect for you!

  2. What a bummer for these people. I have heard of crazy stories regarding winners of HGTV's dream home, and what crazy amount of taxes they have to pay for said winnings. What a shame. The house does seem to have potential, just some crazy decorated rooms for sure.

  3. I had heard about this problem, but had never seen an example. Wow. Unintended consequences when trying to do something good…gone awry for one reason or another. Thanks for the insight. Cherry Kay

  4. I REMEMBER that episode!

What a shame they couldn't just make their home better – and a shame they weren't sensitive to the owners….to lose one's home after it was fixed like that? Wow, that is awful news.

And how can they resell with that weird stuff in it?

    SO SO SAD.

  5. I've always wondered what happened to those houses and why on earth they made those bedrooms so kid specific. Kids do grow up. Thanks for showing us this.

  6. what…Sherry…you don't want to live in a cave with a gigantic fish ready to swallow you up? What a shame they were so over the top. The money would have helped the families so much more…

  7. That is such a bummer…awesome opportunity, but still too pricey! I'm thinking I'd have to keep on looking, too! It'll definitely take the right buyer! XO, Aimee

  8. Sherry, That TV show build a house in Savannah and I did a post on it. It too has since been sold. From what I understand the producers come and overbuild for the show's effect. The family in Savannah couldn't afford the taxes on their huge and expensive house and had to sell before they lost it.
Pity they couldn't have just met the needs of the family.
    Hugs, Ginger

  9. Wow! that cave was over the top…just a bit.
So sad that they can't keep the homes simple so that already struggling families can stay in them and live their lives peacefully without added burdens. From what I understand most of these families are burdened to begin with.
    It's sensationalism at it's worst!

I know you're not in need of a home with a cave and a LARGE MOUTH BASS…keep looking you'll find your perfect home.

  10. I can't believe the price of this home. In New Zealand in Auckland prices have soared and you would not get a tiny little apartment for that price, a house such as this would be well over 1.2 Million!!

I am not sure I like the cave but a novel idea thats for sure….I think the fish would give a little child nightmares. However, I do see lots of potential in this property at such a bargain price…wondering what something like this would rent out for?

  11. One always wonders about what happens to these kind of homes. The people can't really afford to stay in them and the decorating most likely would not appeal to anyone else. I think I would have to pass on this foreclosure. Too much work and hard to sell. Thanks for sharing. Have a great week.

  12. The same thing happened in Atlanta; the couple lost their home too. I don't think the show takes many things about the re-build and owners into consideration. Very sad-
Thanks for sharing this story. Hopefully, this home will find a new owner soon.

  13. Whenever I would watch the show, I would think they won't be able to afford the power bills. They over build the extra features like lighting and other gadgets, we all know how expensive it is to run things like that, let alone the extra air conditioning. It's very creative, but most of those people need a more practical home.

  14. Hi Sherry, I remember watching that show and I always wondered why they had to give 1 Family such an expansive over the top home when they could have given 5 Families a nice home on a much smaller level…this is proof….Taxes alone would kill you, not to mention trying to keep up with the maintenance….Thanks for sharing…Christine from Little Brags

  15. I agree with Cindy – these homes are completely impractical!
They go from nothing to the extreme ( like the name of the show suggests lol ) that fish would terrify me never mind children LOL
Sad – it's actually very sad that they end up losing in the end……

  16. It certainly has potential for somebody but I would not want to take on such a huge project. I can't believe the owner gutted it. Can't wait to see what you end up buying! I know it will be fabulous.

  17. I can see major potential in this home and I love the creativity that went into the cave and other rooms. It's too bad it became a foreclosure. Very sad for the family that lived here.

  18. Thanks for making me feel justified when I said the homes were not manageable for the recipients! You don't give a couple with physical restrictions three story ceilings and a swimming pool. Who's going to maintain that stuff? It's sad.

  19. When seeing the show, I always think the houses can never be sold because the decoration is usually too personal and not always in the best of taste. We have a similar show in France and lots of owners have a problem later because one of our taxes is based on how big your house is and people who are part ofthe show usually can't afford to pay the taxes once their house is twice as big as it was before.

  20. I had often wondered how these families would be able to stay in these huge homes. I think it is very said having read that to think that there might be others having had to do the same thing.
