Installing Bead Board Wallpaper And Board And Batten

Hi everyone .  Thanks so much for your kind comments on our newly improved kitchen island.   This was such an easy and inexpensive project but it made such a big impact in our kitchen.

I used bead board wallpaper purchased on-line from Home Depot.  This stuff looks so much like actual bead board and I installed it in less than an hour.  Our island does not have a extended counter top that accommodates bar stools so I was not worried about the paper being damaged.  I would not recommend the paper on a wall that gets a lot of abuse.

While looking for board and batten ideas on Pinterest I found most people used 1/2 inch MDF and had to remove the existing molding so that the boards would not extend further out than the molding. Once the boards were installed they would add new molding to the bottom of the island. This was our plan until I found 1/4 inch MDF at Home Depot and it sat perfectly on top of the existing molding.  I had Home Depot cut the MDF into 3 inch wide strips.

My sweet Dad helped me with this part of the project,  we installed the boards using wood adhesive and small brad nails.  Note:  Watch where you are nailing if there is plumbing in your island.  Several years ago our daughter added bead board to their island and they learned this the hard way.  Punctured pipes are not what you want.

Next was caulking, priming the MDF and painting the entire island.  We used Valspar Optimus paint in “Summer Gray”.  Don’t let the name fool you as the paint is a soft white with gray undertones.  I was trying to avoid a white paint with yellow tones and this color is absolutely beautiful.  The Valspar paint was a dream too.  This is my new favorite paint as it went on very smooth and coated so well.  We will be using it on the kitchen cabinets too.  (not a sponsored post, I just loved this paint)

One project done and lots more to go before the kitchen is complete.
