Sweet Hubby’s Gift + More

Hello friends.  If you are a regular reader of my blog you know I have a love for sterling, especially Victorian vanity pieces.  For Christmas my sweetie bought me the perfect little addition to my collection.  Take a look and see if you can spot it.

Look a little closer

I am in love with my new sterling Victorian clothes brush. It has a beautiful repousse handle and horse hair bristles. I think these pieces appeal so much to me because I like to imagine where they came from, were they a gift from her sweetie, and what was the lady like that owned them.
These are also new additions to my collection of serving pieces.  I recently purchased these three pieces at a thrift store for fifty cents each!  They were so badly tarnished I could not read the markings but I assumed they were silver plate.  Imagine my surprise when I cleaned them and found monograms on two of the pieces and that all three were marked Sterling!!
Here is a close-up of the handles.  See the beautiful transferware plate they are on….
My sweet friend Lynn at The Vintage Nest  knows I love transferware and she gave me this plate filled with goodies she had made. The sweets were delicious and they didn’t last long around here. Yum!
My newest blogging friend is Betsy from  A Perfect Setting  and we met for the first time a few weeks ago at the lunch I held for several local bloggers. Betsy brought me this gorgeous napkin holder. She knew I was a recent transplant to Virginia and she included these wonderful napkins.
Thank you ladies for these wonderful gifts!  It is so true that bloggers have the biggest hearts.
I wish each one of you a Happy and Healthy 2011
xo,
Sherry

  1. I love the plate that your friend put the goodies on, and I don't know of any blogger sweeter or more deserving than you to receive the plate or the brush. Happy New Year!

  2. He did such a good job! I just found your blog and am your newest follower!!! I absolutely love antiques as well. And, just wanted to say howdy neighbor…. I graduated from William and Mary and am living in Richmond now. :))))

  3. Sherry I love your gift, I agree, when i look at something like that i think about who could have used it and when. The first large spoon you got is very much like the one I found at a Thrift store for 25cents and I too was surprised to find that it was sterling. I think that is why we keep treasure hunting, happy New Year Sherry,Kathysue

  4. Oh I just love your beautiful silver dressing set and your new clothes brush is fabulous. What a wonderful gift. Love your pretty new serving pieces and the plate and napkin holder are such wonderful gifts from blogging buddies. It is so fun to meet fellow bloggers.

I hope you have the most Blessed New Year ever. Hugs, Marty

  5. What a lovely and thoughtful Christmas gift. Some years ago my husband asked that someday he would like his mother's dresser set which had belonged to her mother. It is silver and consists of a hairbrush, mirror and a horse hair clothes brush. This clothes brush is about 1"wide, 6" long and the bristles are about 1 1/2"long. My dh's mother sent the brush to a man back east who at that time was one of the few people in the US that could restore a horsehair brush. Yours is indeed a treasure and you are lucky to have one in such fine condition.

  6. What a beautiful collection of lovely things! I like to imagine the past lives of things like this too. It's almost like each object has a soul that's been infused with that of previous owners.

    Lovely!

  7. Hi Sherry! I am a new follower! Your silver collection is so elegant and romantic! I love imagining the history behind sweet victorian pieces too! Thank you for sharing and Happy New Year to you! Best Wishes, Amanda http://www.onegirlinpink.blogspot.com

  8. Your silver pieces are just gorgeous. What a nice surprise to find such a treasure at a next to nothing price. It's amazing what we can find when we're always on the hunt.
Thanks so much for sharing. Happy New Year to you.

  9. Hi Sherry! There is just something about knowing that a person in our life knows us so well that they would pick out the absolute perfect gift full of meaning and love. Your hubby did great! When we were dating my husband got me an antique silver brush set with mirror and comb and hairbrush and I treasure them and look forward to passing them onto my daughter someday. Thanks for highlighting these treasures and for linking it up to Inspiration Friday this week! You have been such a blessing to me on this blogging journey and I hope you have a very Happy New Year!

  13. Sherry I adore your collection of silver! That clothes brush is so sweet, and to find those lovely sterling spoons so cheaply – well – that is the best part of all. I posted about some neat Tiffany pieces a few weeks ago and learned a little about their preciousness. Enjoy your treasures and wishing you and yours a very Happy New Year! m

  14. The Victorian clothes brush is beautiful piece. I also have bought Sterling at thrift stores for fifty cents. I go to a few thrift stores every day looking for fine antiques.

  15. Now wait a minute…something's not right here. You get gorgeous vintage silver for Christmas and I got a chicken! LOL……Looking forward to our first outing of the new year. Hope I find some 50 cent sterling silver pieces while we're out. xoxo

  16. Sherry,

I too am drawn to silver pieces — especially all the details in the older pieces. Your husband found a very unique piece to compliment your collection. Blogging friends are so sweet and generous.

Best wishes for a happy, healthy 2011!

    From another silver lover,
    Hugs, Honey

  18. 50 cents a piece?! Boy, did you ever get a surprise steal on those serving pieces. I love the clothes brush too. Like you, I always invent/imagine a little story behind them and what a treasure or luxury certain things must have been to the original recipient.

Thank you so much for your friendship throughout the past year, Sherry. (I appreciate your thoughtful comment on my Top 10 too.)

    Happy 2011!
    Jami

  19. 50 cents – OMIGOSH that is awesome! Congrats on the find…. I love your silver pieces and the new one from the hubby – very cool! I found you through Southern in My Heart's link party

  20. Beautiful gifts…I also have a little silver handled brush that I adore but never knew what it was for…thanks for the info as I thought it might be for brushing crumbs from the table.

  21. Hi Sherry! Your husband was very thoughtful, what a cool piece! You have a good eye for detail, the silver pieces were great finds! That was nice of you to post pics of your gifts. Sorry about your furnace and car battery. Hope things are toasty now. I had tire problems, switched cars with my husband, and only made it to Otterdale rd. before some pipe or something burst, and smoke poured out! Hope you had a good New Year's Eve, I'm still in the process of taking down and organizing decorations! See you soon!

  22. Your silver is exquisite..just love your transfer plate too.
It is so special to be in touch with a gracious blogger…thank you for visiting me. Happy New Year.
    Shel ♥

  23. I love the little clothes brush decked out in silver. It reminds me of a whisk broom which my dad always used, and I recently found in cleaning out their house. I also enjoyed your sterling silver find. I recently was given a bunch of blackened sliver serving pieces and odd bits and am having fun restoring them and finding out what I actually have. Happy New Year!

  24. What a fabulous find! I can't believe these were sterling and sold for that little. I would say this means you are going to have a fantastic year! Wait, you already have. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous.

  25. Sherry, your husband is a sweetheart! The clothes brush is both beautiful and I would think unusual. It makes the perfect addition to your grouping. And the three thrift finds ~ well, 50 cents a piece. Really?
Glad they found their way to your home where they will be honored and appreciated. Thanks for sharing the beauty. Your photos are gorgeous as well! ~ Sarah

  26. Hi Sherry,

    I love it.

    Love all your gifts.

    hugs
