Which Chairs Would You Choose?

This is the table I bought at the Polka Dot Flea and I need your help deciding on which chairs to use.  The
table is in our eat-in area off the kitchen and it is where we eat most meals.   I purposely didn’t decorate the
top so you could just look at the chairs.
Here are my two options (for now).
You never know when I may come home with even more chairs.
Sorry about the terrible picture quality!  My camera stopped working so I am using a point and shoot until
my (8 month old & expensive) camera is repaired .
You can see the dark wood chairs in The Kitchen Tour of our previous kitchen.  Boy, I miss all those
cabinets!
You may remember the buffalo check chairs from The Painted Frenchy Chairs Post.
There is still lots to do in this room but before I go further I need to decide which chairs to use.  I am
looking for a light fixture to replace the one over the table and the burgundy roman shades will be changed.
The room also needs some architectural interest so we are considering bead board or wainscoting and
 adding molding around the window.
Back to the chairs….which would you use?
If you don’t like either choice that is okay too.  I am open to any suggestions and appreciate your help.
Thanks,
Sherry

  1. Oh wow! Hard decision! I like the way the black chair continue to black wall decor, but I love, always love the lighter scheme. The chairs with the blue look like they work better with that corner. I guess it's where you are looking from. Either would definitely work. I say switch them out from time to time.

  2. One combo you didn't show us would be to do every other chair dark, light, lol – jk. I love them both – one for grounded continuity, the other for adding an airy feeling. Maybe a seasonal switch, even though FL never feels like anything but summer, would give the feel of the seasons.

  3. I understand that the black chairs work with the black cabinet but I love the lighter chairs. I like how the black cabinet pops with the buffalo checked chairs and becomes a focal point.

  4. I do like them both very much and initially my response was an emphatic lighter ones! BUT once I saw that awesome black hutch on back wall – go with the black chairs…or paint that black hutch lighter to match the plaid………so stick to black with black or lighter and lighten up the hutch.

    Always have loved your tastes.

    Hugs.

  5. Hi Sherry,

Ah, those beautiful blue and white buffalo check chairs are such a fine and understated complement to the pretty plate wall and I think lighten up the atmosphere, sweetening it with charm.

  6. quandary. I like the buffalo check and style of the chair with the table, but like the different color of the others. Maybe you might paint the chairs or the table a different color as they might be too matchy-matchy??? I'll bet you didn't want to hear that. 🙂

  7. I like the white chairs with the table, but I think that's only because they are white, Sherry. I like the casualness of the armless darker chairs. Would you consider painting them white or are you planning on painting the table? Sometimes I leave something in place for a few days to see if I like it.

  8. I like the lighter chairs … the table disappears when you put it with the dark chairs. A rug on the floor may help with this … but you didn't ask about a rug now did you. 🙂

  9. Well, each of us have different tastes and styles but I think the buffalo check chairs work best. Can't wait to see more of your new house.

  10. Another suggestion is that you could use a buffalo check chair on each end and two black ones on each side of the table. Wonder how that would look?

  11. I loveeeee the buffalo check chairs, the fabric is gorgeous..
Hope you keep them with your pretty table they go together beautifully 😉

  12. Hmmmmmm. I guess I'd sit on them (and let family sit on them) and see if one or the other styles is more comfortable. You can always paint them, right?

Personally, I kind of like the dark ones…..

  13. I love the buffalo check chairs with your new table! The black chairs with the light table looked a little too jarring. But I could see the other chairs working if you painted them. I think you need to consider the comfort of each chair.

  14. I am going to say the light chairs….Now I am going to go back and see if I am in the majority or minority because I am a lighter shabbier loving girl but, that doesn't mean I am in the majority! lol

  15. I love the light chairs but either will be just lovely. It is fun to have options, isn't it? Looking forward to seeing what you pick- xo Diana

  16. Oh, such a problem, better or best! I think that you should go lighter in your new Florida home. Both look comfy and both are really pretty, but I have a thing for buffalo check. Can't wait to see what you decide.

  17. Buffalo check. Large scale curtain rod hung high with colorful panel drapes. Paint shelved piece to coordinate with new drapery. Statement chandelier will make a big difference, too. Drapes may eliminate need to trim windows and add wainscoting, both of which may make the space seem smaller by dividing wall height. Have fun!

  18. Definitely the light chairs, they compliment the table and the fabric brings in softness…can't wait to see which lighting you choose…took me a year to pick out a Chandy for our breakfast room!

  19. I like the light chairs. Probably because I too have a white table and tried my pine ladder backs with it for awhile, then brought in some cane back chairs I had painted French blue and white. They just look "right"

  20. Hello Sherry,
The buffalo check chairs! They are pleasing to the eye with the beautiful table, look a lot more comfortable and a linen roman shade would complete the scene.
I also picture a fabulous, crystals dangling chandelier!

  21. I definitely like the more casual look of the darker chairs but I feel like they are a little dark. The lighter chairs are very nice but seem a little formal for an eat-in kitchen. I think the darker chairs would be very nice if painted a lighter color.

  22. I love them both….how about the light buffalo check for the spring and summer months and switch to the darker for the fall and winter; however, if you are looking for a more permanent solution then I love the light buffalo check for sure!…

  23. Everyone seems to be in agreement. The lighter chairs with the check look perfect from one angle, but when the dark piece on the other wall is shown, it gets complicated. If it were my house and I owned all the lovely furniture, I think I would paint the stand to compliment the table and chairs and focus on that lovely blue to accent and pull the furniture all together.

  24. The lighter chairs are perfect! But, if this were my dining room….I would consider painting the buffet. There seems to be too much black on one side of the room. You are so good with decorating…I know you'll figure this out! 😉

  25. Style-wise, I like the fabric covered chairs better with the table, but the darker chairs help to pull through the other dark furnishings that you have. What if you used a darker (not black) fabric on the lighter chairs?

  26. Looks like you've received a lot of opinions Sherry. Still, I'll weigh in and say I like the lighter chairs in this space. Can't wait to see the room complete!
    Blessings,
    Patti

  27. Definitely buffalo checks! But I would Scotchguard them before my husband ate anything. ( You can figure out the rest). Seriously, the "buffalo" chairs are exquisite. Are they comfortable?

  28. Although I love the buffalo check chairs, I like the black ones the best because for me, the white ones don't stand out.

  29. So many people seem to like the buffalo plaid and therefore pick the white chairs. I think they're too bland with the rest of the white in the corner. I say use the black chairs or…my favorite option…paint the white chairs black and keep the buffalo plaid covers.

  30. You probably already decided, but I ADORE the blue and white Louis XVI chairs. I just added some similar ones to the kitchen table at our farm. It really dressed up the place.
